If you think that cup of coffe is the breakfast definition or meal, I give up. Till August you had breakfast at Courtyard as I spoke with one GM, after he told me Marriott change rulez.
Again, Marriott never claimed $10 USD per day for member + 1 would fully cover breakfast. But $10 USD should cover more than a cup of coffee.
You are mistaken that Courtyard provided complimentary elite breakfast before August 18, 2018 (except at Courtyards in Asia with lounges). The lack of elite breakfast at Courtyard has long been a sore spot here on FlyerTalk.
Now, Courtyard still does not provide breakfast — but $10 USD per day for member + 1 as a Platinum Welcome Gift choice is a big improvement. (Courtyards in Asia with lounges still provide breakfast.)
When I choose a hotel, I take the elite benefits into account. To bring this discussion back to Berlin, in 2016, I chose the Berlin Marriott Hotel instead of the Courtyard by Marriott Berlin City Center. The hotel I chose cost more, but the lounge access more than made up for the price difference at that time. It was good decision. The breakfast and evening service at the Berlin Marriott Hotel lounge were excellent.
But now imagine a Courtyard that is well-reviewed, has a good location, and costs substantially less than a nearby full-service hotel. Such a Courtyard would be a good choice, even if the $10 USD per day for member + 1 only pays for half the cost of breakfast.
