Not only is the hotel usually cheaper than the legacy SPG options, upgrades at the legacy SPG properties can be very poor.
And I haven't gotten any relief from the resort stay, but haven't asked. When I stayed there a lot, they would give me extra drink coupons which helped.
I agree. The oceanfront suite was fine, though it would have been better if the windows facing the ocean opened since there was no screen on the sliding door of the lanai. If I remember correctly, the windows were advertised as opening.
Not only did I have the resort fee waived last year on my stays but I was told multiple times by staff that corporate guests weren't charged the resort fee. No corporate contract was required, either. Just booking through the hotel; in this case, the general manager's assistant handled everything for me.
I kept returning even when the rate was comparable to the Westin Moana because of the way the property treated me. I also liked the pool deck, which was great for sunbathing if you didn't want to get all sandy or lay on a beach where homeless people urinate and stab themselves with needles full of drugs. The renovated rooms look nice from the pictures, but I have a feeling it will be a while before renovations are complete.
My only real complaint, besides the property calling itself a resort when it's really a city hotel, was the food-and-beverage. Room service was good, but the other outlets were poor. As I think has been discussed before, the complete lack of a lobby bar struck me as an epic design failure. For the prices and low quality of the hotel-operated rooftop bar, I'd rather just buy a bottle of champagne from the lobby ABC or through room service and drink it on my lanai at sunset.
