Somewhat related, we just flew SDF to LGA - two adults, two kids. I had booked Basic Economy so had to wait to get to gate to get seat assignment. On both legs all four of us were upgraded to Comfort plus. I noticed on return trip that most of the people who purchased cheap basic economy got comfort plus since that was where most of empty seats were on plane.
