Even with status I still considering paying extra at booking for premium class. Part of reason is that status isn't what it used to be. Ten to 12 years ago I scored upgrades about 50% of the time as a mid-tier elite and 80%+ as a top-tier. Then, with changes in the programs, it dropped below 25% for top-tier and became virtually nil for mid-tier.
