Thanks for your help. Just wanted to update on resolution. I called back and spoke to supervisor who talked to help desk. Said request was denied by cathay so they couldn't do anything. I booked a flight on SQ to SFO that departs hong kong at around the same time. Then this morning I got an email from AA saying I'm ticketed and see that reflected in my account. Miles have now been deducted. So it appears that it is a valid itinerary. I believe it's the last flight out of SEA for the day so it's the only valid same day connection on CX thru SEA at the moment.
