NYC seems to have a massive trend towards small backless stools in the hottest restaurants. Salvation Burger comes to mind as a "restaurant of the month" - but also have seen this trend at places running near $100 a person. Momofuku Noodle Bar and the new Nishi from David Chang spring to mind.

My favorite dumpling place in Chicago's China Town has stupid little backless seats combined with tables you can't get your legs under. We'd had to change to delivery to get their scrumptious chow.
