Instead of buying new tickets, did you find out if you could apply your existing tickets to those?
Ideally, especially if traveling on the same airline, it would seem to make sense to do this buying one way tickets.
But, as noted, the value you get out of the tickets is going to be related to the fare rules for the tickets you are not using.
