speaking of checking the seat map, I just did check based on a comment above yours and boom row 6 is labeled as MCE! So I switched to that! It was showing old seat map 2 days ago.

I'm on AA AA98/91 in mid-April and was able to select "PE" seating despite the economy fare on both legs; it's labeled as MCE. Nice consolation prize for when the SWUs don't go through
