IIRC the element upgrades that I remember were one night, and where I had called the property in advance to ask whether their policy was to upgrade SPG Plats. The result was an upgrade from a studio room to a small one bedroom suite.

At aloft again for one night stays, I've succeeded in getting the property's only suite both before and after the merger and also in getting a huge handicapped corner room on the top floor multiple times in a property that doesn't have any suites, although always with the understanding that if a disabled guest books or shows up before I check in, of course I get booted to a regular room.
