I joined the BAEC in 1991 and essentially stopped collecting TPs in 2001. CE was "OK" back then. I recently went MLA-LGW (R&R not a TPR, CE £20 < ET, but hey) and it was much much better. Progress?
Speaking of progress in late 2018 I went F PHX-LHR (also R&R not a TPR, F £200 > CW,but hey) also excellent, but what happened to the caviar, caviar spoons, red shoe bags,white towels, Floris toilet water etc etc - in the last 20 years - although I did like the big windows?
Currently @ 22k TPs (and Mrs Bf says I have more than enough expensive hobbies to think about progressing further).
I think that what happened is that you were on another airline where caviar was being served - I don't recall caviar in BA 1st class even in 1999. Of course there are still carriers that offer a proper 1st class service
