They don't need/want your business.
As for UA, why would they care? Can you list the flights that UA sells that connect to BR? Let's see, SFO to SZX, which you said BR flies.

Why don't you complain to UA?

And where in the Star Alliance rules does it say they allow 24 hour cancellation for any ticket? Can you pull that up?
