That sounds great! Campers are a thing in Iceland, I saw way too many and it is indeed a great way to save money!

Do not be afraid about gravel, I personally had no problem with it even though I did get the gravel insurance offered by my company.

Check with yours whether they offer such a thing, so you aren't worried about it throughout your trip .
