I left an iPhone at the Park Hyatt Tokyo (I know, I know) and didn't realize until I got home. Strangely, they did not reach out — but when I emailed they quickly responded that they indeed had my iPhone.
My understanding of the Japan hotel POV is that, as these hotels are occasionally used for...um, "discrete" encounters, they will never initiate contact after a stay, out of an abundance of caution.
