I dont think this has anything to do with purchase protection. Its a chargeback for goods not received. If it never made it to your door and the tracking shows it lost in transit, it should be an open and shut case. Its weird that Amazon is requesting a police report. I have never heard them request that before for something lost in transit.
Can you post up what the tracking shows?
