Thanks for the post. This is interesting, but I'm not sure how valuable the companion certificate really is. The list of terms and conditions is quite long, but is worth a few laughs, at least:

Q. Can you call API to check travel availability before sending in your Registration Form?
A. No, you cannot call API with specific questions on reservations/flights until you receive your Companion Activation Certificate in the mail. Once again, the Companion Activation Certificate is received only once you send in your completed and signed Registration Form.

Q. How do you qualify for the Complimentary Companion Airfare?
A. To qualify for the Complimentary Companion Airfare, you must purchase one roundtrip airline ticket from Airline Promotions, Inc. (API) at a published fare that is not less than $349.00 (9/15-1/15) or not less than $379.00 (1/16-9/14) - before the application of any taxes. Fares before taxes that are less than these minimums do not qualify for this offer. Passengers are responsible for all taxes, fees and surcharges for both airfares. Both travelers must have identical itineraries.

Q. Why is a signature required on the Registration Form?
A. It is a FAA requirement. [really??]

Q. Once you receive the Registration Form will you be able to make your travel arrangements?
A. No, you must completely fill out the Registration Form, including a signature, and return to API at the address printed on the form. Then, within 14-28 days, you will receive a Companion Activation Certificate with instructions and a toll-free number to call and activate your certificate.

Q. What is considered a major airport for this program?
A. A major airport generally has jet service by at least three (3) major airlines. However, service and carrier participation varies from market to market.

Q. What are the six major carriers?
A. American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US Airways.

Q. Can you travel any day of the week or anytime?
A. Each airline has blackout dates around major holidays and during peak travel periods to certain destinations. Free Companion reservations are capacity controlled by the airlines. Therefore, your desired itinerary is subject to API and airline availability.

This could potentially be valuable to someone, but sadly I'll have to pass, as it's rare that I spend over $349+tax on a domestic, 14-day-advance, Saturday night stay, non-blackout-period flight. The exceptions are generally smaller airports that certainly won't be served by jets from 3 of the 6 majors!
