Adding a domestic leg doubles the cost of said leg over booking separately

I have been trying to price up a flight from GLA to MCO for next February via LGW, ideally it would be a package with a car. But the price works out nearly £100 more than if I did both legs separately. Apparently when we add the GLA leg BA's system moves the LGW-MCO flight into a higher fare bucket for some reason. When we spoke on the phone the guy couldn't or wouldn't allow us to pay the cheaper price and have both legs covered in case of any delays etc. Has any one been in this situation and had a successful outcome. We are happy to pay the cheaper price now rather that waiting to see if the price reduces in a sale.
