you do not need a stopover in each continent - I have done Europe - US - Aisa or vice versa several times this year and either time I have just connected to the next flight in (out of) the US - most often FRA-LAX-NRT with 1:55 hrs in LAX - as you have to pass Immigration there and can not simply connect to the next flight out of the US.
