I just booked 4 J standard awards LAX - HKG for a few days before Christmas - and there was some availability on other routes like New York via Vancouver (but ironically not YVR-HKG if I looked at that flight by itself). But have you also checked choice and tailored award levels? A ton more miles but if you are looking at losing them that might be an option.

Generally the availability you see for AA on Alaska or BA’s website should be bookabke at AM too. When researching my trip there are also some discussions on here of AM hiding premium award availability on non-stop segments from AA - you have to hold a connecting segment first and then drop to get the non-stop - not sure if AA plays that game back at AM.
