I'd have to say the biggest factor will be the occupancy level of the hotel and how close in price the points room is to the cash room. I just had a 5th night free points stay and added an extra cash night. I booked the exact same room type using cash as I figured the hotel would be pretty busy (it was) and I didn't want to bother changing rooms.
