For any smaller bag (not so heavy it's hard to lift) I'm confident that BA First crew would help you put it above your head (especially if you briefly explained your joints make it hard to lift, though you should not really have to say that in F).

I'm shocked that an FA was unwilling to lift a small bag for a passenger with medically-related assistance needs. What were they going to do, leave it there for takeoff?
