I stayed here for 5 days this past week and here’s my report:
- Pre-arrival – I had two rooms, one for my wife and me and one for my mother. One room was booked on points and one booked via a travel agents on a Luxury Privileges rate. I booked deluxe king rooms and applied a SNA to the room booked on points. Roughly 30 days prior to my arrival I received an email from their concierge team as an introduction and asking if I needed concierge services. 5 days prior to arrival our points room was upgraded to the Berri Suite (I only choose suites for my SNA) and my paid room was upgraded to a Junior suite. When I went to check-in the rooms where both changed to Junior Suites however I luckily had a screenshot showing the confirmation of the Berri Suite and reached out to my Ambassador. After some back and forth between my Ambassador and the hotel, they were able to move me back to the Berri Suite. The correspondence was a little disappointing since the hotel claimed I called in and wanted two rooms next to each other and through their goodwill they upgraded both rooms to a Junior Suite. However, I was guaranteed an upgrade through my Luxury Privileges rate and used my SNA for the Berri Suite. A miss on their part but fortunately I had an Ambassador who was able to work everything out.
- Check-in – We arrived from Frankfurt on the train and took the Metro to the hotel. The hotel’s façade isn’t the best but you can tell you’ve arrived by the “Hotel de Berri” on the sidewalk out front. There was stands blocking off the front of the hotel for car services however no bellman to greet us. When we walked in however we were instantly greeted and our bags were taken. Check-in was simple, there was a little confusion on the luxury privileges rate that was corrected and we were walked to both of our rooms. They gave a us a voucher for the bar for 3 drinks (the cheapest drink on the menu was probably 15 euros). The bellman showed us the room and how to work everything (the whole room is run off an iPad). There was fruit and a large bottle of Evian and fruit on the table which was refreshed on our third night.
- Rooms – the Berri Suite was amazing with very nice furnishings, artwork and a canopy bed. Probably between 1000-1200 Sq Ft with an extremely long entrance, followed by closets with nice hangers and a living room. The living room had some chairs, a beautiful velvet couch and a TV hidden behind a mirror. The bedroom itself was broken into a room with a sitting table and another sitting room with a small coach, two chairs and a desk. The bathroom was nice as well, separate tub and shower, Toto toilet with all the features (warming seat, bidet) and nice Diptyque products (not heavily scented). Normal luxury collections extras – shower caps, comb, bath salts, q-tips, etc. The only qualm I have about the room layout that it’s one massive room without a door separating the spaces (besides the bathroom). The living room and bedroom were separated by a fake fireplace that had TVs on both sides. The Junior suite was nicely appointed as well, probably 500-600 sq ft with the exact same bathroom as the Berri Suite except the toilet was accessed through another door. Each night they offered turn down service which was very basic – remake the bed if needed and place a mat, slippers and water bottle next to the bed. Both rooms faced the garden so they were very quiet. I assume if they faced the street it may be much louder since there’s a Ferrari / Lamborghini rental and those cars are coming loudly down the Rue de Berri.
- Electronics in the room – this was my biggest issue with the hotel. The lights, curtains and TV were all controlled via an iPad (however not the thermostat or the ability to chat with the hotel). The light and curtain controls worked fine the Berri suite however in the Jr Suite a huge lamp in the middle of the room was tied the bathroom light controls. The TV functions were a complete nightmare in my Berri suite (my mother in the Jr suite didn’t even attempt to use them). There was only one speaker working in the Berri suite which was very far from the bed so we could not hear the TV. I called over two nights for them to fix the issue and even brought the front desk manager to my room to show him however it was never fixed. My simple solution was to just unplug the surround sound from the back of the TV. After they “fixed the issue” the second time they introduced a new issue, while watching TV and falling asleep, the TV randomly went off and all of the lights in the room went on. This happened three more times through the course of the night (we finally gave up and just kept everything off). Overall, it’s a great concept but the execution of this was a complete failure. Anyone who struggles with electronics will absolutely hate their system. Also, the thermostat had a weird range features – we couldn’t set the temperature only a range (i.e. 20-24 C). We could never figure it out.
- Breakfast – I’m personally not a big breakfast person however my wife is. I selected my Platinum amenity as breakfast and the room on the Luxury Privileges rate included an American Breakfast (which caused mass confusion). I let my mother and wife get the American Breakfast which was their continental buffet plus any egg dish from the menu that had eggs about 7-8 different ways (however on the last day we found out the eggs benedict wasn’t included). The Continental Breakfast was a decent spread of about 5-6 different fruits, 2-3 different yogurt flavors, 5-6 different cured meats, 2 different cheeses and various breads. Also included was juice and tea or a coffee drink. Service was great except when we ordered avocado which oddly took 20-30 mins each day were ordered it. Although I asked every day, I wasn’t required to sign anything except the last day when they tried to charge me for the eggs benedict which we had on three previous days.
- Spa / Fitness – there was a sign next to the spa / fitness area that said it was “closed temporarily” however I don’t think it was ever opened. A little disappointing this is not mentioned on the website. I did pick in the room and it looked like everything was complete for a tiny spa area that included a dry sauna and steam room plus a small fitness area. I believe the room was being used as an employee break area or something as there was a TV, tables and a mini fridge. I like to work out daily and in place of the fitness center the hotel offered a full-service gym about four doors down which is always a better option then a small hotel gym. The gym is called “CMG Fitness”.
- Concierge – we didn’t use their service except for tickets to Versailles, which they happily arranged. There was always someone at the desk and they always greeted us / ask us if we need anything when we left for the day
- Check-out – I figured there would be some issues with the breakfast and my Luxury Privileges rate that included a free night so I got to the desk early. There was random breakfast charges each day ranging from 6 to 70 euros each day amount to roughly 200 euros for the 5 days. They happily took off these charges without a fight. They also charged me for the free night however took this off as well. We had a car service pre-arranged to take us to CDG. When the car arrived there was not one there to help us load the bags in the car (beside my driver). A little disappointing for a luxury hotel.
Overall, we enjoyed the hotel. The staff are extremely friendly and are always willing to help. Unfortunately none of them wear name badges so I cannot call them out individual however I believe the front desk manager is named Maxine and he definitely would go out of his way for guests. By the 2nd or 3rd day they started greeting me by my name. My only concern is that the furnishings and art work are unique per each room. We will see if they can stand the test of time without looking ragged. The hotel area is okay, right off the Champs, but we were all over the city anyway so location did not really matter. I would probably stay here again over the Westin or Le Roch which is where I staid the previous three times I was in Paris however after walking by the PdG I think I may have preferred that hotel.
