EF said it was J2. And after some pushback, he got me up front with ease. So he was clearly not telling the truth.
The agent might have meant that the cabin has a capacity of (for example) 12 passengers and 12 are already booked in the cabin. ExpertFlyer reporting "J2" means that DL is willing to sell 2 more seats, even if that results in overbooking. (That might be why you got some pushback.) After you were booked into J, I would have expected EF to report "J1".
