OP is a first-time poster so may not be as experienced a traveler.
I've twice had bags not make my international flight. In each case (once DL arriving to DTW and once KL arriving to YYZ), the airline has told me to go on through and it will clear the bags on arrival and ship on to me.
Wonder what DL told the passenger at MSP?
