Called KLM Platinum line … somebody just cancelled, and me and another person were in the queue for the seat. I guess my Lifetime Platinum status helped (or helped screw the other unfortunate soul).

Nothing to do with status. You just got there first.

Given the price of your flight to London, it is probably refundable/flexible.
