Not making an official statement - but having worked in airline IM in the recent past, this is absolutely untrue and would be next to impossible to actually carry out even if you wanted to. I can't get into the details on how IM systems work, but want to dispel this nonsense.
I also worked at an airline - and agree there is a 0% chance someone in Revenue Mgmt has fingers on a keyboard for a specific flight to let some friends on the plane.
