As regards your question, then I don't see that you can do anything more other than go to the airport early and be ready to explain the full scenario to the check-in agent.
BA had no available flights for tomorrow, the earliest they would accommodate me was Saturday, which defeats the purpose of a weekend trip. So I've had to cancel with them and rebook myself with travel insurance to reimburse.
