Works for connections too, but you have to keep the same connection point. So if your original ticket is a connection through DFW, you can't standby for an itinerary connecting through ORD (as an example). But you can standby for an earlier or later connecting itinerary. You used to be able to connect via a different hub many years ago, but no longer. I remember back in the day even non-elites could standby for free.
