Yes but I’ve sat in the supposed “connected” 788 seats and I never had any issues. Maybe I’m just lucky, I don’t know? My flights I’ve been on “connected” seats were LAX-HND-LAX, ORD-PVG-ORD, and twice from LAX-PEK-LAX . I would often sit in the middle traveling with someone, and I never had any issues with the seats moving.
The 787-9 seats are definitely better and seem roomier (at least to me) but the old seats have never been an issue for me for whatever reason.
Your seat mates had no ants in their pants or you lucked out by having better adjusted seats, which seem to vary in “motion over the ocean” susceptibility.
