Much better to keep the fee low, and spread the burden by making (almost) everyone pay it. If that's what they're doing, I'm all in favor.
Ready2Go, this isn't aimed at you...just my general rant on the topic...
A fee-free *wood card would hardly be a 'burden' for AMEX. AMEX is only charging the annual fee because they know people will pay it. It's all about consumer perception. $30 really is a good value in comparison to other fee-based cards.
There are (and always will be) plenty of financially inept persons paying exorbitant finance charges to keep AMEX's ivory towers shining without my 30 bucks in the kitty.
