The lower part of the mountain can get very icy. I actually thought that the snow condition in bounds was pretty bad, compared to the US. It was there at the end of Jan and early Feb.
I think skiing is Japan is really more about the overall experience. I really like the food (even though it's mostly just decent around Niseko) and the onsen at the Hilton is pretty spectacular.
