Would separate PNRs even matter if there was an IRROPS? They would clearly be able to see that OP was traveling together and the IRROPS would give them a little more flexibility to keep them together.
A friend of mine was once traveling with her mother on a separate PNRs but ran into an IRROPS and they both ended up on a new PNR to their final destination.
