When this happened to me (about a year ago), it was due to the cancellation of one of my return flights on a partner airline (QR). Despite numerous calls, AA reassured me that my itinerary was fine, but it wasn't until I checked in and was at the Admirals Club that I found out what happened. The staff there ended up booking me on a BA flight instead.
