The original poster has a 9 year old. I don't think you need to preboard.

I just flew last week on NW with my 5 and 7 year old. They announced the preboarding and specifically mentioned it was those traveling with preschoolers. In actual fact, I preboarded with them because I was alone, it would have been a different story if my husband was there.
