You didn't even need to be stuck in the smoking section. I once made the mistake of buying a cheapie ticket from Eupo Air. They got the block of seats immediately ahead of the smoking section. Even when I managed to get two rows ahead of the smoking section, it reminded me of the old adage about swimming pools.
Oh yes I remember sometimes the smoking section would go further forward in the centre seat sections so if you were at the rear of the non smoking section on the window sides it was brutal. I remember agreeing to sit in the smoking section on a YYZ-LHR flight in 1988 so my girlfriend could have a couple of cigarettes and having the woman beside her just light one cigarette after another have one puff on them and then let them smoke into our faces until they got down to the filter. Even she agreed we'd sit in the non smoking section on the way back after that
Back on the liveries it will be nice to see a 744 in the Landor livery. BA really was on the upswing during that period
