BA ffp is used by some USA residents.
I have never flown on AY but managed to get status via AA flights (avoidng the $$ requirement and getting domestic lounge access which of course you dont get as an AA member). Biggest downside is no upgrades and limited rewards. But if your focus is on things like seat assignment, lounge, boarding group and free baggage, then AY offers a good alternative to the usual ‘credit with the airline you fly with most’ approach.
