Thanks for the insights. I think I might hit Townsville. The casino seems to be the most "lux" accommodations, but even that looks a bit more bare bones. There are a few motels on the strand that get great reviews though. I've also looked at the Aquarius, so its nice to hear no complaints on that.
MEL was really tempting, but I like the thought of really getting off the American beaten path. Townsville/MI seem to be just that.
Townsville is pretty bare bones. It's not a traditional holiday destination, or GBR access point. The de-facto capital of far-north Queensland is Cairns which is where most of the tourist infrastructure is. Townsville is basically a port for mineral exports and a RAAF and army base. If you want to avoid American tourists then I'm sure you'll be happy in TSV!
