You did forget to factor in one thing: if you reserve 4 nights on points, you're eligible to get a 5th night free. So those 70,000 points could get you 5 nights rather than 4 - and conversely, if you can't / don't want to stay a 5th night, it's a waste of points if you can use them later for a 5-night stay.
I'm just using the 4 nights as an example for my question. In your case, you used 2 separate reservation. My whole point of my question was if that reservation was only 1 reservation instead of 2. The reservation with 1 award night and the rest of the reservation was cash, would you still get points? By Marriott FAQ, it states Cash + Point earn no points for the cash portion of the reservation but is it counting only the real Cash + Point such as $70 + 8000 points for 1 night or does it include the first night award, and 2nd night cash? Both situation is consider Cash + Point.
It doesn't make sense they would give no points for the full cash night unless you book separate reservation for each night. In the example of the case of cash, award, cash, award, you would need to create 4 reservations to get points for 2 nights.
margarita girl kinda answered it for SPG but with her statement about the C&P being worthless and not offered(The cash or points option is always offered so I don't think she understand what I was asking), I think she is talking about the $70 + 8000 point situation for one night instead of the situation I'm asking about $50 for 1 night and 17,000 points for 2nd night.

In the olden days, the ones offered by SPG used to be excellent, but they enhanced them about 4 years ago, and they've been almost worthless since. Since they were further enhanced by Marriott, there is no way I would ever consider a C&P booking. Luckily, they are rarely offered.
I'm sorry if I'm not being clear, its just I'm confused about this question and don't want to waste extra cash or points or create 5 reservations just to get points for the nights I actually paid when I can create only 2-3 reservations.
