I found a record both of the points deducted and the remaining account balance after the redemption. That's as good as it gets for going back to Marriott.
I still can't believe the sorry state of Marriott's IT and customer service that makes me go through all of this - it's a funny notion of "customer loyalty".
Well, if the remaining account balance is the same as the current balance AFTER you have canceled the reward reservation, then this should be the proof to show the points have not been returned to your account. You can then make a pdf file and send it to Marriott as an attachment with your email to demand the refund of the points.
Personally I have been doing screen shot at each step of the award reservation so I can go back to see if there is any crazy things happened - and I found the 5th night free award could become chargeable all 5 nighrs if you happen to use the Choose Room Feature Tab!
I am in the middle of making over 10 reservations for a trip much later this year - I made screen shot of the beginning balance, wrote notes as each reservation has taken pts from the balance, and make sure my manual reconciliation matches with what the Marriott site said.
Last night when I was in the middle of making an award night reservation, when I clicked Submit to finish the booking, I got a Time Out error - No reservation was completed, points were not taken. But I did not want to continue any more. Rather, I waited till today to make sure even after overnight processing, there is no deduction of pts nor a new reservation, just to be on the safe side.
