Part of FAA regulations require a briefing on how seatbelts are fastened/unfastened prior to takeoff, so unlikely to see it scrapped anytime soon without FAA changing their rules. Seems like if you can figure out how to get to the airport and onto your plane, you could probably figure out how a seatbelt works, but I guess better to be safe than have an incident where someone couldn't figure out how to release it and safely escape in an emergency? (though they probably aren't paying attention anyhow)
