It is not SOP, but it can be done ... did it last year but I am sure a C-fare and 1K helped.

In any event, a cancellation opens up a lot more options, that's for sure. If the flight goes out and the OP just doesn't make it to the airport ... that's a tough one ... I'd try via social media to at least take out the flight to avoid a no-show situation. re-booking can then be dealt with later.
