I don't know what the official policy is and can only talk from personal experience. In my case we were able to change flights with no cost on the production of a death certificate. The passenger in question (my sister in law) had no status at all although I had booked the ticket for her in the first place.
So that's yet another version of the (seemingly non-existent) policy. My Gold agent told me that a death certificate would "absolutely not work to change flights, we only ever use them for cancellations"
