I'm not usually one to be fussy over how inflight meals are served, but the tackiness to me isn't the plastic cup, it's the plastic cup alongside the real dishes.
This is one of the little things that just makes more sense on VS or AF. When they deliver your meal in PE, your napkin/silverware are stuffed inside a little glass, and then whatever you get to drink is just poured into that glass (or, err, you pour it yourself if you get a wine split).
No, it doesn't actually make a meaningful difference in the grander scheme of things, but if you're going to serve on real dishes, finish the damn drill.
Full disclosure: I also get twitchy when I check a bag and the little sticker on the back of my boarding pass is crooked. The horror!
