Unfortunately, the OP has chosen to share only partial trip information with us, so all we can do is speculate. “Long-haul” and “short-haul”, for example, and particularly without knowing upgrade instruments, are insufficient to be of much use to sharing an informed opinion.

But fastflier is correct. AA will attempt to preserve a confirmed upgrade made with a SWU or miles and copay. With “stickers” not.
