I can't answer the question on direct recruitment but I don't think reading (off an iPad) is a particularly unique phenomenon. For example I have flow SQ a number of times over the last few years and the cabin crew almost always speak off a crib sheet.
But then every answer to every question is scripted on SQ and there is no deviation whatever. The announcements are the same as I can remember over twenty years.
