If you’ve been using the JR Pass to travel, and there’s still time left on it, the Shinkansen will be no charge, so there’s some cost saving there as well.
However, you can't use Nozomi super express with JR pass. So, it takes longer time (and low frequency) to Tokyo from Kyoto.
