At the time there were two seats available for purchase, one of them probably being the seat that was taken from me. AAgent did not care, said I had to clear again. Ended up being #3 of 3 on the upgrade list at the airport.

ETA: To add insult to injury, the 2 people ahead of me cleared at the gate.
