I stayed at this horrible place about 15 years ago during my first visit to Montreal and had a very similar experience: cheap, dingy rooms, laughable 'continental breakfast', noise all night, people knocking to get in for sex...

It's basically a bathhouse that sells small awful cubicles as hotel rooms. So nothing has changed over the years. It's criminal how much false advertising this place engages in. And that they seem to get away with this all these years!

Since then, I've been back to Montreal many times and stayed at many of their gay B&Bs and finer hotels. My experience at the gay B&Bs, including la Conciergerie which was mentioned above, has been that they are adequate but nothing special. Usually basic (albeit cleaner than the Auxberges!) rooms, or cluttered/fuzzy decor, etc. Good choice in the summer time when the hotel rates are high. In the winter, I'd go for 4 or 5-star hotels, many of which have great low-season rates.
