I use VGCs (which I purchase at a grocery or drugstore with a 5% CB card) all the time to pay for insurance, medical bills, shopping, etc. They are accepted everywhere a visa card is accepted. Just be sure to keep the cards as if you return something you bought in a store the money goes back on the card and you will need the card to access that money again.
