For Athens, I have 2-night award stays (again less than 48 hours in Athens) booked at both Grande Bretagne and New Hotel (Design Hotel) for early September. It is again my first time in Athens, so staying at the Grande Bretagne seems like a no-brainer...but I have multiple 35K certificates to burn, which I can use for the New Hotel, the cash rate for which would be roughly 624 Euros for the two nights, so a decent CPP. I also don't think I'll be spending much time at all in the hotel, so I'm not sure the 120K points for Grande Bretagne would be worth it (even with the free breakfast and potential SNAs clearing). Is Grande Bretagne's reputation, slightly better location, and free breakfast worth the splurge, when I'd mostly just be using the room to sleep?
Also I've never stayed at a Design Hotel before, but it's my understanding I'll get very little (if any) PP benefits. Are Design Hotels in Greece indeed really stingy with upgrades etc.?
I'm exactly on the same boat as you do. Since the 2-night stay at Athens we are planning is such a short stay and we'll be out doing tour, I do not feel that I need to burn 60k points per day to stay at GB or KG. We'll probably need to book two room each night since the occupancy is only 2 at both hotels. I do not think we'll stay much time at the hotel. Also, I get 5 35k reward nights to burn. So look to book 35k properties for the two nights in Athens.
