So, if you were buying tickets for 3 people, and had 1,499 SkyMiles in your account, you would not be able to use PWM at all. 1,500 miles would take $50 off of each of the 3 tickets, but there is no option to apply $150 to one ticket and leave the others at full price - or spread the discount around in any other way.
Luckily In this case, OP has 120k miles which is divisible by the 1500 requirement.

Not so lucky though if OP was rounding up from a number below 120k though ha.
